Bulldog Drummond: An anti-Semitic James Bond
Like Richard Hannay - created by John Buchan - the eponymous character of the Bulldog Drummond series of thriller novels and stories is a prototype of Ian Fleming's infamous James Bond. Drummond, like Hannay, has been largely been superseded by Bond in the latter half of the twentieth century. This is largely due to Fleming's novels featuring Bond having been turned somewhat by accident into a classic film franchise.
However Hannay and Drummond were both made into films and radio series in their time. So why have they largely fallen out of public favour and attention?
As I pointed out in the article I wrote about Hannay: he was portrayed as a fanatical British nationalist and is representative of the archetypal British man of action who created the Empire on which the sun never sets. (1) Hannay fights, like Drummond, for racial nationalism, the expansion of the British Empire and the elimination of its enemies.
Even more importantly Buchan explicitly described many of Hannay's foes as being jewish in addition to an assortment of fuzzy-wuzzies from bongo bongo land. (2) This opposition to semitism has, and still is, completely out of step with the zeitgeist of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
Therefore Hannay has been seen as an unsuitable heroic role model, because he personifies the anti-thesis of modern liberalism-cum-social democracy: uncompromising and ruthless nationalism.
Similarly Bulldog Drummond's popularity has waxed and waned during the same time period as Hannay's and although Hannay has made a very slight and heavily emasculated comeback (via the only Hannay novel where he isn't running rings around and shooting fuzzy-wuzzies). (3)
Drummond is not likely to make a similar come back for the simple reason that his entire identity and the unambiguously nationalist story plots that his creator Herman Cyril McNeile placed him within. Mean that it is next to impossible for modern commissars of acceptable thought to politically rehabilitate Drummond for the silver or small screen without it seeming utterly contrived.
This lack of political correctness can be seen in the role of jews in the novels and stories that feature Drummond, which have not infrequently been accused of lionizing racism and anti-Semitism.
What else can you call the glorious (and hilarious) assertion (in 'Bull-Dog Drummond') that a black pygmy assassin is an 'evil primitive' in need of summary execution?
Jews in the Drummond novels are described as 'nasty-looking' (in 'The Final Count'), 'unpleasant' (in 'The Black Gang') and snivelling cowards when confronted with European manliness (in 'Bull-Dog Drummond', 'The Black Gang' and 'The Final Count').
The unmanly and dishonest nature of the jew is a common theme in McNeile's Drummond novels and stories. Drummond himself refers - in 'Bull-Dog Drummond' - to jewish leftist revolutionaries – who have just been put to flight by him – as cowardly scum with their heads in the clouds. In 'The Black Gang' and 'The Final Count' we find repeated mentioned of jewish clerks who are weak, scheming and generally pathetic (to the point of grovelling on the floor when someone shoots a nasty look in their direction) when faced with the honest and manly fortitude of Drummond and his allies.
This weak and scheming nature is also seen in the Drummond novels and stories in the singular preoccupation of the jewish characters with money. For example in 'Knock-Out' an old jew named Samuel Aaronstein is mentioned as being honest with other people's money as if it is rather unusual for a jew to be honest with money. Even then he is said to pinch-pennies to an extraordinary degree!
Drummond also refers darkly in 'Bull-Dog Drummond' to a 'jew financer' named Samuel Levy who works with the leftist revolutionaries. While in 'The Black Gang' we find two jewish clerks being described as trying to dress well, but then fail to do so because they confuse lots of cheap jewelry with a genuine sense of style.
We get the strong impression that Drummond doesn't like jews very much when in 'The Black Gang': two jewish clerks are flogged to within an inch of their lives with a cat-o-nine-tails as punishment for their involvement in a criminal enterprise that was attempting to steal the Russian crown jewels.
Bulldog Drummond really is an original anti-Semitic James Bond: isn't he?
